In his fourth year at Chelsea having arrived from PSV Eindhoven, the tall, fast and technically accomplished defender immediately established himself in the reserves where he was the third highest appearance maker in 2007/08 with 14+1 games, mostly at left-back, demonstrating an ability to rocket in the odd long-range goal.
In the youth team, he was a centre-back of choice on the way to the FA Youth Cup Final, and alongside Jeffrey Bruma has progressed into the Dutch Under 21 squad, though now plays most of his football at left-back.
Patrick joined Coventry City on loan for the first half of 2009/10, making 20 appearances and impressing with his consistency. Championship leaders Newcastle United then took him for a seven-game spell in early 2010 as he helped their promotion chase, before returning to Stamford Bridge and being rewarded with a Chelsea debut.
That came as a sub in the 5-0 win at Portsmouth, before featuring again from the bench in the 7-1 league win over Aston Villa. He has since been used in pre-season by Carlo Ancelotti.
